Jared Maidenberg leads Houston on Food Revolution Day

Houston, TX May 9, 2012. The famed and outspoken healthy Chef, Jaime Oliver has launched a global movement to promote and combat obesity; Food Revolution Day on May 19.  In every town across America, communities will come together to share their ideas and pass on their knowledge and highlight the world’s food issues. Food Revolution Day is about connecting with community through events at schools, restaurants, local businesses, dinner parties and farmers’ markets. Community leaders that are passionate about good food are encouraged to spread the word and educate the public about eating local.

Houstonian, Jared Maidenberg, Head Trainer at Camp Gladiator and Founder of Pura Vida Livin’, responded to this challenge by becoming an Ambassador of Food Revolution Day in Houston.  Maidenberg has been an advocate of finding a holistic approach to health, diet and exercise for many years.  His personal experience implodes his passion, “A profound experience for me was going out to a local farm and meeting the farmer who lovingly grows & raises much of the food I was eating that day at a Community Potluck, whereby I was literally eating food that was grown/raised just yards away from where we were eating that day. This was a visceral experience I will never forget that greatly impacted me and I am passionate about sharing that experience with others via local farm trips, community REAL food potlucks and farm-to-table dinners. I want to share this experience with everyone.”

He has leveraged expertise of various other healthy living experts, farmers and chefs in Houston to bring Houston its first Food Revolution Day. The event will include Farmers who lovingly grow and raise real food such as David Cater of Utility Research Garden and Michelle Gasaway of Mia Bella Farms and Allen Harrison of Harrison Farms.

Artisans and chefs such as Chef German Mosquera of Roots Bistro, Chef Jonathan Jones of Concepcion, Chef Ara Malekian of Aracan The Roaming Kitchen, Al Marcus of The Grateful Bread, Pat Greer of Pat Greer’s Kitchen, Jennifer Lavigne of Easy Creams Farm Fresh Ice Creams and Sorbets and Lauren Yapundich of Freshii will be show casing their talents of preparing real, unprocessed foods for the event.

Healthy living experts and local food educators such as Kristina Carrillo-Bucaram, Founder of Rawfully Organic Co-op, Christina Cicack, Founder of Houston School Meals Initiative, Mona Metzger of Houston Green Scene,  Alyssa Dole of Recipe for Success, Lisa Pounds of Green Plate Kids, Melissa Jones Humphries of the Western A. Price Foundation and founder of Primitive Diva, and Marcel Ostrow of Beyond Organic will also be a part of the day offering their valuable and educational information about the importance of Real food and healthy living.

Local talented musician (by way of Nashville) Jeffrey Scott Stewart will be providing his unique brand of eclectic music to fill the evening air.

The family friendly event will be held on Saturday May 19th and will include a whole day full of activities and Real food fun at two different venues. Beginning with a Market Intro and Tour at 9:00am at The Urban Harvest Farmer’s Market located at 3000 Richmond Avenue, Houston, 77098.  The farmers market stays open until noon, giving everyone plenty of time to shop for their real food ingredients for the evening’s community potluck and picnic.

The highlight of the day will be a Community Potluck and Picnic at Mandell Park located at 1501 Richmond Houston, TX 77006 from 6pm to 10pm.  Mandell Park and their organic community gardens provide a green refuge for the community and donate fresh produce to the hungry thanks to Tara Kelly, a board member of Friends of Mandell Park and Blackwood Educational Land Institute, who was also instrumental in helping to secure this beautiful location for the evening’s events.

Maidenberg hopes that all around the globe, people will work together to make a difference.  “The goal of the day is to inspire change in people’s food habits and to promote the mission for better food and education for everyone.”
